AutoIcon Laboratories develops long-term preservation systems for firsthand records of contemporary human life. This manual documents the principal components and operating procedures of the Journey 1 archive.

ARCHIVE CROSS SECTION

The Journey 1 preservation system combines a four-sided pyramid cover, an archival base, and an internal tooth-form vessel. The assembly forms the material repository for records prepared for long-term preservation.

TRANSMISSION ACCESSION PROTOCOL

Records are processed, assigned an Archive ID, cataloged with descriptive metadata, and prepared for long-term preservation. Digital files may then be encoded in synthetic DNA and placed within the Journey 1 repository.

DNA ENCODING WORKFLOW

Digital records may be translated into binary data and encoded in synthetic DNA. The encoded material is placed within the internal archive vessel for long-term storage.

AUTOICON FIELD RECORDING STATION

Temporary field stations collect individual accounts of everyday life. Each participant responds independently and receives a unique archive identifier after review and accession.

THE AUTOICON

The name AutoIcon refers to Jeremy Bentham's proposal that a preserved human body could continue to function as a public representation. Journey 1 extends that proposition through testimony recorded while each contributor is alive.

The archive expands through temporary recording stations established in new locations. The first completed deployment took place in Podhradie, Slovakia, from 19 to 21 June 2026.

There are two ways to contribute to Journey 1: record a first person video account at an in person Field Recording Station, or donate a personal record through the online archive.

CONTRIBUTOR INFORMATION

WHAT CAN I CONTRIBUTE?

The archive accepts photographs, letters, journals, handwritten recipes, audio recordings, personal documents, receipts, tickets, drawings, and other materials that document everyday life in the twenty first century.

Choose one focused record from your own life. Ask yourself what would help someone living in the year 3026 understand who you were and how you lived.

IS THE ARCHIVE CURATED?

No. Journey 1 is a non-hierarchical archive. Records are not ranked or selected according to perceived historical, artistic, or cultural importance. Material submitted online or recorded at an In Person Field Recording Station is accessioned as part of the archive.

CAN I RECORD A JOURNEY 1 TRANSMISSION ONLINE?

No. Journey 1 Transmissions are created exclusively at AutoIcon Laboratories In Person Field Recording Stations so that every first person video account follows the same recording protocol. Online contributions are accessioned as Archive Donations.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I SUBMIT MATERIAL?

Every submitted record is processed, cataloged, assigned an Archive ID, and accessioned into the permanent Journey 1 Archive. Administrative review confirms file integrity, permissions, and required metadata; it is not a curatorial selection process. If you provide an email address, a digital Accession Receipt will be sent after accession.

WILL MY CONTRIBUTION RECEIVE AN ARCHIVE ID?

Yes. Every Journey 1 Transmission and Archive Donation receives a unique Journey 1 Archive ID.

DO I NEED TO PROVIDE MY NAME OR EMAIL?

No. Contributor name and email are optional. An email address is needed only if you would like to receive a digital Accession Receipt after your contribution has been accessioned.

HOW WILL MY CONTRIBUTION BE USED?

Accessioned materials may be preserved indefinitely and presented in exhibitions, publications, educational materials, online archives, and future presentations of Farewell Transmission. You must have created the material or have permission to contribute it.
